iTunes: Disable access to Podcasts

Disable the Podcast functionality within iTunes. After applying this command the options will disappear in the navigation bar (Store section) and all other menu options within iTunes v7.1 and above.

defaults write com.apple.itunes disablePodcasts -bool YES

To make the command take effect, you need to restart iTunes.

Re-enable the Podcast options with the following command:

defaults write com.apple.itunes disablePodcasts -bool NO

iTunes: Disable the use of plugins

Disable the use of plugins within iTunes. After applying this command active plugins will be disabled and all other menu options referring to plugin related options will not show up.

Quit iTunes and use the following defaults write command:

defaults write com.apple.itunes disablePlugins -bool YES

To make the command take effect, you need to restart iTunes.

Re-enable the plugin with the following command:

defaults write com.apple.itunes disablePlugins -bool NO

Enable iTunes high contrast mode

If you are using iTunes in bright light conditions the iTunes screen could be hard to read. Instead of activating the system wide high contrast mode you can enable this feature only for iTunes. Quit iTunes and use the following command:

 defaults write com.apple.iTunes high-contrast-mode-enable -bool TRUE

Restart iTunes and it will be activated in high contrast mode.

Restore to default with:

defaults delete com.apple.iTunes high-contrast-mode-enable

iTunes: Disable the Genius sidebar

iTunes contained a genius sidebar that displayed related music in the iTunes store. You can disable this sidebar with the following command:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes disableGeniusSidebar -bool true

Restart iTunes

Revert to the default setting:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes disableGeniusSidebar -bool false

Enable the general iTunes Library

In iTunes 6 and earlier, the iTunes navigation-bar contained a Library playlist that listed all the audio and video in your iTunes library. iTunes 7 removed this, and segmented the library into various libraries (e.g Music, Movies, TV Shows).

You can enable the general iTunes Library, quit iTunes and type the
following two commands:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-library-playlist -bool TRUE

defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-library-playlist -bool FALSE

To disable the general iTunes Library:

defaults delete com.apple.iTunes show-library-playlist

defaults delete com.apple.iTunes hide-library-playlist

iTunes: Enable half star ratings

iTunes allows users to rate songs from 1 to 5 stars. For more precise ratings, enable the half-star rating option in iTunes. Very useful when a song is not quite worth 4 stars but not 5 stars either. Close iTunes and use the following defaults write command:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes allow-half-stars -bool true

Relaunch iTunes for changes to take effect. To give a half star rating, click and slide the star rating scale until the 1/2 value shows.

Removing the half star rating option moves the song rating to the star below it. To remove the half-star rating option:

defaults delete com.apple.iTunes allow-half-stars

Enable iTunes notifications in the Dock

The iTunes Dock icon can be set to display a “Now Playing” song and artist pop-up that transitions in and out and music starts. Use the following Command:

defaults write com.apple.dock itunes-notifications -bool TRUE

Restart Dock with the following command:

killall Dock

The following command adds the iTunes logo or Album picture to the notification

defaults write com.apple.dock notification-always-show-image -bool TRUE

Restart Dock

Revert to the default setting:

defaults delete com.apple.dock itunes-notifications

defaults write com.apple.itunes disableMusicStore -bool YES

Re-enable the home sharing option with the following command:

defaults write com.apple.itunes disableMusicStore -bool NO

Disable support for radio stations (streams) in iTunes

Disable support for Radio Station (streams) within iTunes 7.1+. After applying this command the option ‘Radio’ will disappear in the navigation bar and the Advanced menu options.

defaults write com.apple.itunes disableRadio -bool YES

To make the command take effect, you need to restart iTunes.

Re-enable Radio stream support in iTunes with the following command:

defaults write com.apple.itunes disableRadio -bool NO
