Sync iCloud history and bookmarks manually (Safari)

The Safari browser on your Mac en other Apple devices can sometime go out of sync. Bookmarks, open tabs and history will not synchronized with other Apple devices. It’s possible to force synchronize the bookmarks and other iCloud content manually, this can be done with Safari Debug menu. You must activate this menu with the following Terminal command.

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1

Launch Safari, click on the new “Debug” menu and choose the option ‘Sync iCloud History’ to forcesync Safari history and bookmarks on your Apple devices.

Toggle Safari DNS Prefetching

To improve performance Safari will attempt to prefetch DNS information. In some circumstances this can result in slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found errors.

If you are experiencing those problems, apply this tweak to disable DNS prefetching.

Disable DNS prefetching:

defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false

To activate this close Safari, or reboot your Mac.

Return to the default value with the following command:

defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean true

Safari: Highlight Non-Retina images

It is possible in Safari to highlight non-retina images with a red overlay, this makes it easier to determine if 2x images assets are loading correctly on a retina display. You can enable the hightlight effect with the following defaults write command:

defaults write -g CGContextHighlight2xScaledImages YES

Disable the overlay effect with:

defaults delete -g CGContextHighlight2xScaledImages

Stop Safari creating favicon caches

Safari stores favicons in a database named ‘WebpageIcons.db’ located in the folder: ~/Library/Safari/Icons. It is possible to disable the creation of this database with the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebIconDatabaseEnabled -bool false

Delete the current database after applying the command:

rm ~/Library/Safari/WebpageIcons.db

Relaunch Safari application for changes to take effect.

Restore the creation of favicon database with:

 defaults write com.apple.Safari WebIconDatabaseEnabled -bool true

Disable the resume function in Safari (OS X)

If you want some extra privacy, it’s possible to disable te resume function in Safari. After applying the command Safari will not remember the opened windows which where open at time of closing.

Quit Safari and type the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Safari NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -int 0

To re-enable resume in Safari:

defaults write com.apple.Safari NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -int 1

Set safari activity view collapsed by default

The Safari activity window can be useful for finding resources in a web page. With a lot of pages open, it shows too much information by default, as each web page’s disclosure triangle is expanded. To make the Activity window open with all sites collapsed by default, close Safari and type:

defaults write com.apple.Safari ActivitiesStartExpanded -boolean false

Quit and relaunch Safari for this to take effect.

To reverse the setting to default:

defaults write com.apple.Safari ActivitiesStartExpanded -boolean true

Re-enable the delete key (page-back) in Safari 6

In Safari 6 the behavior of the delete key has been changed. If want to return the ‘page-back’ navigation behavior to the delete key, you can do so with the following defaults write command.

defaults write com.apple.Safari com.apple.Safari.ContentPageGroupIdentifier.WebKit2BackspaceKeyNavigationEnabled -bool true

Restart Safari for changes to take effect

If you want to revert to the default Safari 6 behavior:

defaults write com.apple.Safari com.apple.Safari.ContentPageGroupIdentifier.WebKit2BackspaceKeyNavigationEnabled -bool false

Enable the Safari debug menu

Safari has a hidden Debug-menu that offers some options for debugging the browser. The debug menu is different from the Developer menu. You can perform load and stress tests en additional logging features.

Quit Safari and type:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1

Revert to the default setting:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 0
